Personally, I spent all of this current (last) generation a Playstation guy. The generation prior (360/PS3), I was split. I had the 360 for almost the entire generation, owned the most games on it, 40K gamerscore, etc. I mostly had an Xbox because the online was so. much. better. And I worked for Best Buy back then, and our entire store basically played together on the platform. Towards the end of the generation, I picked up a PS3 for cheap, with a good amount of console exclusives that I missed. For me, Playstation really killed it this last generation. Exclusives were on-point, hardware was great (I had no issues personally), 3rd party support was top-notch, really a great time to have a Playstation.

However...Microsoft seems to have quite a fire underneath them. My personal favorite franchise is Fallout. Now they own Bethesda (Zenimax). This makes things interesting for me, as Obsidian could start making Fallout games again, or anything could happen. I hate Fallout 76, but quite enjoyed Fallout 4 for some perspective. They now have 23 studios under their banner, which could really put a dent into the exclusives market that PS4 was really known for this gen.

Estimates put Xbone at around 5OM units and PS4 at around 114M units. (Microsoft's focus on PC this gen skews these numbers a bit)

Is Xbox poised for a massive comeback this gen? Interesting to think about, I would love to hear some community thoughts.

The main problem with the XSX and the XSS (other than the stupid naming scheme which prompted people to place orders on the Xbox One X) prior to them buying out Bethesda, was the lack of interesting games. Compare what Microsoft showed before they bought Bethesda to what Sony showed - there is a huge lack of quality games with significant name recognition. The one game that Microsoft had that could have dealt a good blow was Halo Infinite, but the game was so graphically underwhelming, it was panned by everyone. Now we have news that the director is dropping out of the project and some fiasco regarding cosmetics in the game.

A potential pitfall that Microsoft has regarding their recent acquisition of Bethesda is this :

If MS can make their exclusives for a few years on the XSX and XSS BEFORE bringing them over to other consoles, this would be an epic win for them. Look at what Sony is doing - they are porting their exclusives over to PC years later after maximizing sales on their console to get even more gamers to use their products. Since almost all of what MS makes ends up on PC day one, this actually defeats the purpose of owning a Microsoft console in the first place.

Sony first party exclusives have insane brand recognition and Sony seems to be doing really well so far :

If Microsoft plays their cards right (like not raising prices of games, not charging more for online), they can steal the thunder from Sony. But there is talk about the PS5 hardware having heating problems and the recent changes to the PlayStation Store are a joke to be honest.

Hubris can make Sony fall, especially if Microsoft decides to price their games at 60 dollars versus Sony's 70.

This gen is really tightening up if you ask me. Both Sony and Microsoft are at the top of their game - the future isn't set in stone and a lot can change from now. Everything boils down to which company is more consumer friendly, and releases more quality games. I give the edge to Sony for the time being based on the sheer number of quality exclusives that everyone is waiting for. Buying Bethesda is a huge win for Microsoft, but if Bethesda pops up another bug fest failure like Fallout 76, then I fear the worst. There is also the Microsoft curse (all the companies that Microsoft end up buying, they ruin like RARE) to factor in...

Fun times ahead :D

You bring up some interesting points, and I think you are right in saying that Microsoft could definitely make up some ground in the coming months. However, as you also stated, PS5's preorders have been insane. Like they have more preorders for PS5 than PS4 sold in the first 90 days. That is absolutely bananas.

I have also read that Zenimax will continue to operate independently, almost as if Microsoft were an angel investor. I do not know if this is good or bad. After Fallout 76, I just have no idea. At least they have Skyrim to continue to print money for them, and two more consoles to release it on. Lol.

I will take your moniker here, Fun times ahead indeed.

I've always grabbed both just because of exclusives I'd want to play on either console. This time around I'm getting the PS5 first and waiting to see what Xbox has planned.

Id like to do that but both are super expensive, and since halo infinites coming to xbox one I'll pick up the ps5 instead

Are you not concerned with it being developed in the GaaS (Games as a Service) model?

I bet against Sony PlayStation once, when I bet on the Sega Saturn. Worst mistake ever!! I said never again. And now over 25 years later I’m praying for the newest PlayStation. Best birthday ever is PS5 comes out 4 days before my birthday. Worst birthday is if I don’t get one. 😩😂
