It's less powerful as well. So the Xbox one x is like 2.6 teraflops or something and the Series S is around 4 to 8 teraflops while the Series X is around 12 teraflops. I'm to lazy to look up the exact numbers.
6 Tflops for the Xbox One X, 4 Tflops for the XSS (PS4 Pro has 4.2 Tflops), and 12 Tflops for the XSX.
Microsoft essentially shot themselves in the foot. The confusing naming scheme aside, there is zero incentive for the normal gamer to go for the cheaper XSS when they think, "more tflops = better performance".

4 Teraflops, but ultimately, it's also a 1440p machine. 1440p, you don't need higher tflops. Still the same system architecture as the Series X. Same CPU and GPU, just downclocked and with fewer transitors. So you'll still be getting the next-gen experience.. Biggest issue with the Series S is the fact that they cut the SSD storage capacity in half (512 GB instead of 1 TB). So my guess is they're expecting to or at least hoping to make back any losses on the Series S with the proprietary Seagate external SSDs in a big way.
Word is, possibly tomorrow at select retailers. And if you're preordering through Sony, possibly tomorrow, but it's by invitation.
