Well, every forum I'm in seems to have one of those so... here goes nothing! Just talk anything about anime I guess. Does anyone else watch anime? Frequently or occasionally? What's your history with it and what are your favorite series, genres and/or creators? Are you watching anything now? Looking for recommendations?

Aside from gaming I guess anime has always been my main "hobby" so... My favorite series which I have been rewatching on Netflix is Code Geass and my favorite studio has always been KyoAni for better or for worse #PrayForKyoAni :( So for the last year or so I haven't watched many new series, if any (my friend insists that I gotta watch that isekai where a lady turns into a villain, someone tell me hows it ?) but before that I used to watch a lot of anime and in fact kept an anime blog for years. In the past year I watched some KyoAni series as well as Servant x Service (anime about public service workers - which I am - by the creators of Working!! so it's... interesting, realistically lol) and Netjuu no Susume (weird NEET woman finds love playing MMO - which frankly was my favorite 2017 series).

Since I haven't watched new anime in months now, can anyone recommend me any recent series? Usually I like series such as the aforementioned, but also scifi/fantasy such as Shiki and Psycho-Pass and slice of life such as Barakamon and CLANNAD are some of my favorites.

(Sorry mods if I'm being inconvenient here! Feel free to delete this if so!)

I used to watch anime daily but stopped like 3 years ago. I got a little tired of typical shonen and highschool fanservice shows. I did recently watch the Junji Ito collection, which was alright. I would probably recommend One Punch Man season 1 even though I haven't seen season 2 yet. My other faves include Hunter X Hunter, Fate Zero, Kaiji, Hajime no Ippo, One Outs, the 3 Berserk movies (NOT the 2016 Berserk anime lol), Rebuild of Evangelion movies, Redline movie, the first Ghost in the Shell movie, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust movie, and some others I can't think of right now haha.

I'm looking forward to the Uzumaki anime coming next year (it has nothing to do with Naruto lmao). It's a horror manga by Junji Ito so I'm hoping it's good.

You're not wrong, anime really seems to have taken a turn for the fanservicey in the latter part of the 2010s. It's Okay but not my favorite "type" of anime either.

Haven't watched past the first few episodes of most of these as I'm not big on shounen in general, but among shounen/seinen anime/manga HxH, Evangelion and old GitS are among my favorites too so go you! Also, Fate UBW was so good but I never got around to watching Zero, looks good though.

Yeah, the moe and ecchi stuff got old fast. Madoka was decent though since it was a dark deconstruction of magical girl shows. I love the fate series but never finished it. Fate Zero is my fave so far since it doesn't revolve around highschool characters :p. It's a prequel to Fate Stay Night, UBW, and Heaven's Feel. That also reminds me of the Kara no Kyokai movies. Those are damn good

Yeah. I think the problem with this kind of anime is it's so formulaic and there is so much of it so it ends up being cliche ; same for isekai and whatnot. And yes I really enjoy what I saw of Fate ; gotta watch that! Didn't watch Kara no Kyoukai but it sounds good too.

That reminds me of some other good ones like cowboy bebop, samurai champloo, Gurren Lagann, full metal alchemist brotherhood, soul eater, gintama, attack on titan, mob psycho 100, monster, jojo's bizarre adventure, death note, Ping Pong the Animation, kingdom, hellsing ultimate, parasite, no game no life, psycho pass, and erased.

Too many to name. A lot of those are typical shonen, i suppose but have some twists and subverted plots. The seinen shows are amazing tho

Guess I say I don't like shounen/seinen because I often just don't even if they're "good" . Out of this list I only never tried to watch Soul Eater (if you don't count Soul Eater NOT! ... ) , Monster, Kingdom and Hellsing Ultimate (and Erased maybe because I just forgot.) . Didn't get past the first couple of episodes of Gintama, Mob Psycho 100 or Cowboy Bebop though and most of these I dropped midway. They're not bad (if I had to say my favorite popular shounen aside from D. Grayman, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter and Evangelion are on this list too.) but it's not for me I guess I feel like sleeping on action scenes. lol. Definitely more one for slice of life stuff here. Give me the moe blobs.

Well, Makoto Shinkai's Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name), Weathering With You (Tenki No Ko) are really good.

Then there is Koe No Katachi (Shape of Voice/A Silent Voice).

If you like rom/com slice of life stuff, Lovely Complex is great.

One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100 (make it till at least Episode 4. I was about to drop it there but the series really picks up and the ending is just stuff only ONE can do) puts shonen on its head and pokes a lot fun of it. The OPM webcomic is also really, really good.

I watch anime occasionally, provided there's something good. I try to steer clear of series that are 10000 episodes long (looking at you, One Piece) because I don't have the time. I'm not watching any new anime now at the moment.

Shinkai's work is great even tho I'm more of an action genre fan. He's probably the only rival that Studio Ghibli has lol

Not a big fan of Lucky Star personally (though I WAS when it first aired! My username was even Miyu Takara lol!) but Haruhi is great ; the novels are great too so it's not entirely their merit though.

Ohh, saw Kimi no Na wa in the theater, really enjoyable yes. :) Didn't watch the other though (as they didn't air in my local theaters) but intend to, these look good as well ... Lovely Complex bored me a little whenever I tried to watch it but loved its songs! Interestingly enough some friends with tastes similar to mine really enjoy OPM and MP100 - should have given them a try but actually IIRC watched a few episodes of MP100 and was.. just underwhelmed? (not bad but not great)

Same here about longer series. :/ It's inevitable for me to get bored along the way.

I think 10-12 episodes max is a pretty good format. Then they can think about more seasons. Netflix is doing a good job producing anime nowadays. The shows themselves may not be the best but they definitely have the money to produce non-mainstream anime. I'm still not a big fan of computer generated anime compared to classic hand drawn ones but it's most likely where anime is headed in the future

MP100's art style really put me off and I didn't get the series till after Episode 4. After that...oh man, only ONE could write a story like this. The final episode of Season 1 was so damn amazing. Season 2 is even better - the art style is much more improved and the story and fights get even better. I really like ONE's work with OPM and MP100.

Princess Mononoke is also pretty darn good (the only Ghibli movie I liked). Have you heard of Steamboy? I thought it was a decent movie.

princess mononoke is hella good and is the only ghibli film with enough action that satisfies me imo. Steamboy was pretty good but i remember it didn't get good reviews from critics

Dunno about it ... Guess to me anime was over after the arson then lol. Gonna miss the days when this studio KyoAni procuduced beautiful handdrawn anime to be honest. On the other hand Castlevania was produced by Netflix wasn't it? Gotta watch it still but the idea in itself hypes me.

Didn't hear of it! Didn't watch much of MP100 nor did I watch Princess Mononoke but I heard good things about all these for sure - gotta put them in my PTW list lol.

The arson was a huge bummer. I never watched any kyo ani shows after haruhi but most of them got good reviews from what i saw online. Maybe the successors to kyo ani can reform into phoenix ani, rising from the ashes 🐣

a friend told me Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru was a pretty good rom-com slice of life anime. He even used the main dude's name as his display name lol. I don't really like rom-com anime since most of it is set in high school and it can get pretty cringe imo

Yes, IMO they had hands down the most beautiful anime in the industry counting the sheer quality of animation and attention to details alone. It's really an immensurable pity to be honest.

You guys know of any other good slice of life/romcom anime?
It's my favorite genre so maybe I can help! Do you have a MyAnimeList or something so I know what you've already seen?
Some good ones I watched recently-ish are Netjuu no Susume (good if you enjoy MMO!), Servant x Service (good if you are a public servant lol.), Barakamon (A TOP FAV!), Tamako Market (too cutesy but ...), Honey & Clover (more mature/josei ...), Love Live (kawaii girls ffs), Kumamiko (controversial but loved by me!), Ore Monogatari (not my cup of tea but many like it...), Bokura Minna wa Kawaisou (amazing), Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (amazing too) and for older ones Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, Haruhi Suzumiya itself and others by KyoAni (ie. CLANNAD and Kanon 2006), Moyashimon, Angel Beats, Genshiken and School Rumble idk...

Also a very funny one... School Days šŸ‘€ /s
