Finally time to upgrade the build?

I've been running the same PC specs for roughly 7 years now and it appears to just be getting to the point where I can't max out every graphic settings on games without sacrificing smooth frame rate on more graphic intensive games, such as Doom Eternal as one example. It can still run every game reasonable well at this point with some minor tweaks to settings though, but given this I'm starting to think it may be time to start looking for upgrades.

For rough specs I'm running a GTX980 graphics card, 16GB RAM, and Intem i7-4770K CPU processor (4 core 8 processor) on an MSI (MS-7845) motherboard. Given the initial look on some of the games coming out on PS5 that are graphic intense and that PC games are going to keep getting more intensive, I figure it's finally time to start thinking about either doing some upgrades to my current rig where possible or if I should start just saving up for a new rig and use the current for a new backup PC given that our current backup PC isn't capable of doing much more than checking email and printing things out.

I haven't kept up as much with current PC hardware so open to suggestions on where trends are heading for performance parts.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It would be best to save up for a new computer since the new parts coming out are the same ones that will be in the new consoles.

I highly recommend you wait for the upcoming Ryzen 4000 series of CPUs to come out. AMD is simply killing Intel and it's not funny at this point. AMD has Intel beat on everything from die size to best value for money. It's coming out in September and I think the mid tier R5 4xxx series will be enough.

As for your GPU, the RTX 3060 would be more than enough thanks to DLSS 2.0 (seriously, check it out).

Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti/3090 vs AMD Big Navi  I think 3080 ti/3090 will win but I really hope big navi is close. I'm not a fanboy of either but competition is always good.

They're pretty equal in terms of performance but AMD is better when it comes to cost, especially when you get a CPU that comes with a cooler.

Wait for the AMD 4000 series of CPUs.

It's better you go for AMD - games are being increasingly made for multi-core and multi-threaded applications, AMD CPUs are on 7nm+ versus the 14nm die of Intel CPUs (this means AMD CPUs will produce less heat, use less electricity), they offer better deals especially regarding the price-performance ratio. Buying an Intel CPU this day and age would be a waste.

If you care about long run gaming and streaming, pair a Ryzen 4000 series CPU with something like the Nvidia RTX 3060 or 3070. With Nvidia's DLSS 2.0, you are going to set for a LONG time. Trust me, check out DLSS 2.0 on YouTube if you wanna know what I'm talking about in action.

Solid advice. People are price gorging the RTX cards now due to low supply. The 700$ RTX 3080 is being sold at 2500$. It's best you hold on till next year when the prices stabilize as the supply is met.
